The collector/ client, fully dressed, lies on a treatment bed. The therapist's/ practitioner’s hands are placed gently on or slightly above the body in various, fixed positions, from head to toes. Sometimes, the prescribed hand positions are not used adopting, thus, a more intuitive approach. The different positions of the hands remain for 4-6 min at each point. Kneading of the skin or tissue is not part of the procedure: Reiki is not massage.

 

Many individuals report feeling cold, pulsating heat or a feeling of high temperature during the treatment, usually entering in a calm and relaxed state. In some cases, chronic or acute pain can diminish or completely vanish. Sometimes, allergies and other chronic illnesses completely disappear. The benefits and the recovery time are different for each person.

 

The treatment typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes. However, it may take longer, if necessary. A Reiki treatment can be done during a surgery or even if a person is unconscious.

 

Today, there are many hospitals in the world using Reiki in various fields of health.

 

Reiki is applied to patients in Hartford Hospital (Connecticut, USA), at the Cancer Therapy Unit in “Harry Gray Cancer Center”, at the dialysis unit and the outpatient unit in Brownstone.

 

Reiki also helped cancer patients at the Washington Cancer Institute in the Washington Hospital Center.
